B&O/CSX - Clarksburg WV through the years 1973-80

Rail Fan Adventure --

I haven’t looked at this stuff in years, so I thought I would scan and share them.

1. B&O GP9s 6551-6542-6585 w/b at the east end of Clarksburg yard. US 50 is in the background. I can’t remember if they were moving or not. 03-14-1973.

2. B&O 5966-6433-4810-5963-5957 accelerate out of town with an e/b “QD” (as B&Oers call a freight train). GP9 6488 waits on the right. Clarksburg.

3. These engines are sanding heavily or GP38 4810 has a smoking traction motor. GP9s 5966 and 5957 came from the C&O. No. 5963 is still in C&O paint. Note the position light dwarf. B&O Clarksburg.

5. J Tower to Grafton is now the Bridgeport SD. Unfortunately most of the rest of old Parkersburg SD is gone. B&O Monongah #1. Parkersburg SD 1969.

6. USGS Clarksburg quad, 1996, 1:24,000 scale topo (7.5 min.) covering Short Line Jct. on the left (west) to the east end of the yard on the right. The depot is near the location of bench mark 1019. Clarksburg WV, 1:24,000 quad, 1996, USGS. Click here for a larger image.

7. GP35 3500 with GP9s 6457-6511 are resting between moves. 05-23-1980. B&O Clarksburg.

8. The depot is on the left just past the overhead street bridge. The coal in the yard probably came off the West Virginia & Pittsburgh SD from down Weston way. B&O Clarksburg.

9. West Fork engine terminal looking north. The fuel stand is in the center. 09-18-1980. B&O Clarksburg.

10. Looks like there were two sand towers at this time. Straight would probably go to the MR SD and Fairmont. Right would go east to the depot and yard. Now I would definitely shoot that C&O boxcar. B&O Clarksburg.

11. Looking south. The steam engine house would have been out past the new locker room building. The fuel stand appears to be no longer in use. That’s my gray 1977 Toyota Corolla parked on the right. I suppose that is the WV&P SD extending on down the to the river to the left of the pole. B&O Clarksburg.

12. Looking westward on the MR (Monongahela River) SD toward Fairmont. The bridge crosses the Parkersburg SD. The MR may be abandoned at this time. B&O Clarksburg.

13. Looking at the MR going left (east) toward the depot and right (south) toward the engine terminal. I’m confused at this layout, but I don’t have any track charts for this era. B&O Clarksburg.

14. The eastern-most bridge passes over the Parkersburg SD. The track leading off the MR to the left joins the WV&P SD and goes to the depot. J Tower was just beyond the bridge on the right of the main line. You can see under the bridge that double track is reducing to single going west. B&O Clarksburg.

15. B&O valuation map for 1921. The location of the West Virginia Short Line and its use here by the Monongahela Valley Traction Co. is a puzzle to me. I remember a good sized hill being here! Everything except the main line is now gone. When we were there last October the area is growing up in trees, and the property is not easily accessible. Clarksburg.

The Spring 1996 issue of The Sentinel, the publication of the B&O Railroad Historical Society is a double issue that devotes 23 pages to Clarksburg and the WV&P.

We will look at the yard and its structures next.
