Rail Fan Adventure --


1. NS switch indicator signal at Alta (MP WV 226.2). Green arrows indicate the route for the spring switch at Belva (MP 227.6) to the WV Secondary (>) or the connection to the Vaughan Railroad (<).

2. Inactive Vaughan Railroad connection to right. Former C&O Gauley SD on bridge. Both NS and CSX served the Fola Mine via the Vaughan Railroad which used the last five miles or so of the Gauley SD to reach the new track construction. NS junction Belva.

4. NS siding looking west at Lockwood. At one time this was the Peters Branch of the NF&G. Although built by the NYC it was reached by running over several miles of the NF&G from Swiss to Peters Jct.

6. Terry Eagle Coal Company’s Lockwood Belt tipple was located here on my 1991 visit. Clearfield.

9. NS switch indicator signal at Drennen for the Jones Industrial Track, a spur to the Nicholas Energy Mine. The NS employee timetable says a green arrow (<) indicates spring switch at MP WV 246.8 is lined for the Jones Industrial Track. A green arrow (>) indicates it is lined for the WV Secondary. This yellow light indicates the switch is not lined properly. The crew will need to stop short and operate by hand. Spring switch may be left as last used.

12. The spur actually exits to the right off the Secondary and then crosses over going up the grade to the mine. The Secondary continues to Cornelia. NS Jones Industrial Track. Drennen. View 3.

13. Inactive Peerless Eagle Coal Co. tipple at Cornelia, the end of the line.

14. Inactive Peerless Eagle Coal Co. tipple at Cornelia, the end of the line. You are fairly close to Summersville at this point. View 2.
